Artobotic- A Jewel In The Crown Of Edinburgh Culture
The Artobotic art project has quickly become a beloved fixture in the Edinburgh art scene since its inception in 2016. Located in the lobby of the Edinburgh City Art Centre, the vintage ‘art vending machine’ invites visitors to insert £10 in £2 coins and pull out a mystery box containing original artwork by local artists.
But Artobotic is more than just a novelty – it’s a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work and reach a wider audience. Many famous artists have contributed artwork to the mystery boxes in the past, including Peter Randall-Page, David Mach RA, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Ai Wei Wei, and John Byrne, giving local artists the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with these distinguished artists in the same exhibition and encouraging them to take the next step with their art.In addition to supporting local artists, Artobotic also provides a small income for participating artists. Currently, 70% of the sale price goes to the artist, and 10% goes to the Art Centre. This helps to provide a sustainable income for artists and allows them to continue creating and sharing their work with the community.
But Artobotic isn’t just beneficial for the artists – it’s also a fun and accessible way for visitors to discover and own original, affordable artwork. The element of surprise and the potential to uncover a valuable piece by a distinguished artist adds to the excitement of the experience. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to supporting and promoting its artistic community, and a true jewel in the crown of Edinburgh culture.
Artobotic is a self-funded initiative that does not take any funding from the arts funding body Creative Scotland or any other funding bodies. Instead, it relies on the support of the community to continue providing the city with a means to access affordable art and lead people on a voyage of discovery of art and artists.
